Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive in Flinders Island
Your group will travel to Flinders from Launceston or Hobart, where there is a rental car waiting for 5 days of exploring the island. Your accommodation is a short half hour drive from the airport.

Check-in for 4 nights to a spacious double room, complete with tea and coffee, and complimentary Wi-Fi, set in native gardens in the center of one of Flinders’ main townships. Spend the afternoon settling in; there are plenty of options for your first day on the island, including scenic drives, exploring the beaches, or booking onto one of the tours listed below. If you land before lunch, stop in at The Flinders Wharf or Flinders Island Bakery in Whitemark before continuing onto your accommodation.

Meals: For lunch and dinner, take advantage of the onsite bar and restaurant at your accommodation. With water views, this is a local favorite, and you can watch the fishing boats come into the wharf as crayfish, scallops and scalefish are transferred from their boats to your table!

Flinders island is defined by local produce, and seafood is plentiful here. Your meals for the whole week will be based on fresh local food. If you’re dining at the accommodation, don’t be surprised if locals come in for a drink with their instruments - there’s a great lively vibe here, often ukuleles, guitars and maybe a banjo will be playing over your meal.

Days 2 - 4: Day Tours
Customise your tour based on your group’s interests. With the freedom of a car rental, you can choose to either DIY your days on the island, swimming in the clear waters of Trousers Point Beach, fishing off Salmon Rocks, or taking advantage of the many coastal trails to hike (notable walks include the 1.5 hour circuit from Trousers Point to Fotheringate Bay, and the Strzelecki Peaks walk; a 4-5 hour climb to the island’s highest point). A valid parks pass is required for National Parks.

There are also many options for tours, and we can coordinate a group price for the following tour options should you wish to add any to your stay:

Tour Option 1: Day Tour of the Island
This day tour takes in the whole of Flinders Island, and is a fantastic way to combine both a northern and southern island tour. You’ll take in history, natural wonders, wildlife, scenery, food, and fishing, as you explore Whitemark, Wybalenna, Emita, Killiecrankie, Lady Barron, and Trousers Point.
Whitemark is the commercial centre of the island, where you’ll learn stories of the heritage buildings, visit Furneaux Gallery with exhibitions of paintings and fine arts, and can pick up locally handcrafted souvenirs.
Wybalenna is one of the most significant Aboriginal historical places in Tasmania. It is a historic settlement where Indigenous Australians were forcibly relocated during the 1820s, as colonial authorities removed them from mainland Tasmania. There is a museum, as well as a school and a chapel which have been restored, and the old cemetery which sheds light on the unhappy and tragic history here.
Killiecrankie is most famous for Killiecrankie Bay, where the lucky fossicker might find a Killiecrankie diamond. There is a beautiful beach on the corner of the bay, and much topaz which is commonly found among granite boulders on the foreshore. There are often crystals, gems and quartz found here.
Trousers Point is a more secluded part of Flinders Island, and here you can enjoy the white sandy beach surrounded by boulders covered in red lichen. This is a great place to whip out your camera as the scenery is quite dramatic, and with Mt Strzelecki looming in the backdrop, this is one of the most photographed spots on the island.

Tour Option 2: Flinders Island Kayaking
Explore Flinders Island from the water, and take kayaks out to discover the long sandy beaches and granite peaks from the shore. It’s a completely different perspective, and allows you to also discover secluded inlets and bays you wouldn’t otherwise get to if touring on land.
This is a fun, and active yet laid back activity your whole group can enjoy; you’ll be accompanied by plenty of bird and fishlife, and the waters are so clear that you have fantastic visibility into the underwater world below.

Tour Option 3: Fishing Tours
Flinders is known as a premiere fishing destination, and while you can catch large Flathead, Gummies and Salmon from the rocks and beaches, there are many great options for charters and fishing tours. Choose to add as many of these tours as you would like across your 4 day itinerary on the island.

  • Crayfish Tours: Book onto a local crayfishing boat, where you can pull craypots around the coastline of the Island.  All fishing gear and licences will be provided for crayfishing and fishing for the many other abundant species of fish that inhabit the coastal waters.

  • Full / Half Day Fishing Tours: Take a full or half day fishing tour from the beach. This includes all your fishing tackle (rod and reels, bait and tackle), transport from your accommodation, picnic lunches or BBQ, morning or afternoon tea, eskies and ice for drinks and storing fish that you would like cleaned and packaged for your trip home, as well as expert tutoring in catching Flinders Island fish.

  • Offshore Fishing Tour: Flinders Island has a number of charter vessels that operate all year round. We can coordinate packages which include one or more days fishing from several operators depending on what time of year you would like to fish and for what species. The west coast offers excellent drifting for flathead and gummy sharks as well as trolling for Kingfish.

  • Night Fishing Gummy Sharks: Around full moon when the tides are perfect for night fishing the large gummy sharks move close into the beach to feed on sand crabs, and this is the time to catch a gummy shark for the freezer. Bag limits apply to gummy sharks in Tasmania waters (2 per person).

  • North East River Fishing Tours: One of the premier fishing spots on Flinders Island, North East River offers the chance to catch and release large quantities of Australian Salmon, Large Dusky Flathead, Flounder, Prawns, Crayfish and Abalone.

Day 5: Departure
Wake up and enjoy a final Flinders breakfast before checking out at 10 am and heading to the airport for your departure.
